Goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland. Thyroid is a gland present in our body. Its shapes like of a butterfly, located at the base of the neck and just below the Adam's apple. If the thyroid gland grows larger than this condition is known as goiter. It is generally painless. If the gland gets very large the patient may have problems in swallowing the food and in breathing.
Historically, Goiter was caused due to the lack of iodine in the diet of a person. But nowadays iodine is present in the salt, so the risk of goiter is decreased. Usually goiter is caused due to the imbalance in thyroid hormone production or due to the nodules that develop in the gland.
Symptoms of Goiter
- Hoarseness (voice)
- Neck and ear pain
- Coughing
- A feeling of tightness in the throat
- Swallowing difficulties
- Breathing difficulties
- Snoring
