Kaposi's sarcoma
Kaposi's sarcoma- a skin cancer that is characterized by purple-red tumors that start at the feet and spread upward on the body; commonly occurs in people who have AIDS
Kawasaki disease
Kawasaki disease- a childhood disease causing fever, rash, skin peeling, swollen lymph nodes, and possibly complications of the heart and brain
Keloid- a raised, firm, thick scar that forms as a result of a defect in the natural healing process
Ketoacidosis- the dangerous accumulation of chemicals called ketones in the blood, sometimes occurring as a complication of diabetes mellitus; also called ketosis
Ketone Bodies
Chemicals that the body makes when there is not enough insulin in the blood and it must break down fat for its energy. Ketone bodies can poison and even kill body cells. When the body does not have the help of insulin, the ketones build up in the blood and then “spill” over into the urine so that the body can get rid of them. Kidney- one of two organs that are part of the urinary tract; responsible for filtering the blood and removing waste products and excess water as urine
Kidney Disease
Kidney Disease- Any one of several chronic conditions that are caused by damage to the cells of the kidney. People who have had diabetes for a long time may have kidney damage. Also called nephropathy.
Kilocalorie (kcal)
Kilocalorie (kcal)- A unit of energy provided by food one kilocalorie is the heat required to raise the temperature of 1 kilogram of water by 1°C from 14.5 to 15.5°C. In lay terms, the term energy is incorrectly used as a substitutes for kilocalorie (kcal).
Kimmelstiel-Wilson syndrome- a kidney disorder that can occur as a complication of diabetes mellitus; can cause swelling, high blood pressure, and kidney failure
Klinefelter’s syndrome
Klinefelter’s syndrome- a genetic disorder in which a man has at least 1 extra X chromosome in his cells, causing infertility and female characteristics
Kyphosis- excessive curvature of the spine, which usually affects the top part of the spine and causes a hump
